Vice-President Hu Jintao Met with Indonesian President Megawati (25/03/2002)
2004/04/21

On the morning of March 25, 2002, Vice-President Hu Jintao met with Indonesian President Megawati at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu extended a warm welcome to  President Megawati. He recalled with pleasure his visit to Indonesia at invitation the year before last and expressed his pleasure to meet President Megawati again in Beijing. He noticed that Megawati and  President Jiang Zemin had fruitful talks on Sunday, and reached a consensus on a wide range of issues, which, he said, will vigorously push forward the development of China-Indonesia relations.

Hu said that the Chinese side is glad to see that under the joint efforts of both sides, China-Indonesia relations have gained good development momentum in recent years.
The constant exchange of visits between top leaders of the two countries has increased mutual understanding and trust. Exchange at various levels between the two countries has been very active, with economic cooperation expanding and the two sides cooperating well in regional and international affairs. These facts fully manifest that the political aspirations of developing mutually beneficial cooperation of both sides are under implementation and rendering positive results. Hu pointed out that Indonesia is an important neighbor of China, and it is a set policy of China to develop good-neighborly cooperative relations with Indonesia. He said  that China is ready to make concrete efforts with Indonesia to further carry out a series of consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and push forward bilateral relations to  higher levels under the guidance of the spirit of the Joint Statement by the two countries.

Hu said that the peace and development of Asia will be finally attributable to the efforts of all Asian people. The Chinese side is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Asian countries including Indonesia on the principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and coordination, in order to deal with all kinds of challenges in traditional and non-traditional fields and contribute actively to the promotion of regional and global  peace, stability and prosperity.

Megawati felt glad to meet Vice-President Hu again. She said that she is bearing a great task granted by the Indonesian government and its people in leading a large delegation to visit China at the invitation of President Jiang Zemin. She said she has also brought the sincere hopes of her government and her people to further develop the friendly relations of cooperation with China.

Megawati completely agrees with Hu's comments on bilateral relations, expressing her thanks to China for its selfless assistance and support. She said her cordial and friendly talks with President Jiang on the previous day had led to consensus on many issues and satisfactory results. They agree that the two sides carry out as soon as possible all cooperation projects in different areas. She said Indonesia is willing to work with China to grasp opportunities in developing bilateral relations, and bring their traditional friendship and friendly cooperation to a higher level, recording a new historical chapter in bilateral relations. She also stressed that the Indonesian government will continue to observe the one-China policy.

Megawati said that Indonesia and China once advocated for the famous "Asian and African Spirit". Now that the new situation has occurred, Asian countries should strengthen unity and cooperation. Indonesia will continue to uphold an independent foreign policy of peace, and be committed, along with China and other Asian countries, to promoting development and maintaining peace. The two sides also exchanged opinions on regional and international situations as well as the issue of international anti-terrorism.
