On May 17, 2002, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, who
is on an official visit to Indonesia, held talks with his
Indonesian counterpart Hassan in Jakarta. The two sides
exchanged views on bilateral relations and other
international and regional issues of common concern in an
in-depth manner, and reached broad
consensus.
Tang positively evaluated
Sino-Indonesian relations. He said that contacts between
leaders of the two countries and exchanges on various levels
have become increasingly vigorous in the recent years. The
two countries have intensified their mutual trust and
maintained good coordination and cooperation in
international and regional affairs. The Joint
Declaration signed in 2000 between the two countries has in
particular set the direction for the future development of
bilateral relations. The Chinese side feels satisfied with
the good momentum of bilateral relations.
Tang
said that the friendly relations of cooperation between the
two countries are undergonging all-around development. The
cooperation in the key fields such as agriculture, energy,
resource tapping and infrastructure building has now
started, and the two sides have appointed specific
departments to speed up the implementation of the related
issues of the US$400 million preferential credit
China offered to Indonesia. China's State Planning Commision
and the Indonesia's Ministry of Mines and Energy will
convene the first meeting of the "Energy Forum" as
soon as possible. The transportation departments of the two
countries have reached agreement on the project of bridge
construction. The agricultural and fishery sectors are
consulting on the issues of signing fishery agreement and
carrying out agricultural cooperation. The Bank of
China has sent advance teams to Indonesia for the resumption
of a branch office in Indonesia. Tang said that the Chinese
side is willing to make joint efforts with Indonesia to
solidly expand the economic and trade cooperation field and
continue to elevate the level of trade and economic
cooperation, so as to push the all-around cooperative
relations based on good neighborliness and mutual trust to a
new high.
Tang said that as a friendly
neighbor, China is pleased to see the situation in Indonesia
developing in the good direction. Both China and Indonesia
are multi-ethnic countries and national harmony is of vital
importance. Tang expressed his appreciation to the
Indonesian government for its more active and tolerant
policies and the efforts to improve Chinese Indonesians'
situation. Meanwhile, he pointed out that China consistently
advocates that overseas Chinese should respect the laws of
their country of residence, actively integrate into the
local society and make contribution to the economic
construction and the social development of the their
residing countries.
Foreign Minister Hassan
extended a warm welcome to Tang for his visit, saying that
this visit has further enriched and consolidated the
exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. He said
that in the recent years bilateral relations have made new
progress, contacts at various levels between the two
countries have remained close and frequent, cooperation in
key fields has developed smoothly. The exchanges between the
leaders at various levels have in particular constituted
solid foundation for the growth of the bilateral relations.
Hassan said that the bilateral relations are currently
facing good development opportunities and advantageous
economic situation. He said Indonesia appreciates China's
assistance to Indonesia and is willing to further strengthen
the cooperation with China in above-mentioned fields and
expand the coordination and cooperation in regional and
international affairs in order to continuously consolidate
and strengthen the relations between the two countries.
