2019/11/04

On November 4, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece in Shanghai.

Xi Jinping welcomed Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the second China International Import Expo (CIIE) in China. Xi Jinping noted, hosting the CIIE is a major move of China to firmly support trade liberalization and economic globalization, and to voluntarily open up its market to the world. It will help promote economic and trade exchanges and cooperation among various countries, and boost the international trade and world economic growth. We are pleased to see Greece to participate the CIIE as one of the Guest of Honor Countries to actively promote high-quality Greek products to Chinese customers via the CIIE.

Xi Jinping stressed, with a traditional friendship, China and Greece understand and respect each other, enjoy solid political mutual trust and a sound foundation for cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Greek side to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, deepen friendship and mutual trust, promote practical cooperation, especially let the Piraeus port project play a leading and demonstrative role, jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative, and work for more cooperation outcomes in sectors such as energy, transport and telecommunications. China and Greece, both ancient civilizations, need to enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, advocate dialogue and mutual learning among civilizations, and maintain communication and coordination on major international issues. Greece is welcome to join the cooperation mechanism between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC), and is expected to play an active role.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, I am very pleased to lead a large economy and trade delegation to China for the second CIIE. Greece and China are both ancient civilizations and share a long-standing friendship. Our mutually beneficial cooperation has benefited the two peoples, and the Piraeus port project, in particular, has become a flagship project of the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative. Greece attaches great importance to China, admires China's development philosophy and achievements and is China's reliable cooperation partner. Greece firmly supports the Chinese side on issues concerning China's core interests. The Greek people are looking forward to President Xi Jinping's visit to Greece at an early date. Greece will continue to open to China, and welcomes Chinese enterprises' investment. Greece will work with the Chinese side to uphold multilateralism, and actively participate in the cooperation between CEEC and China. Greece believes that Greece-China relations will have a brighter future.
