Q&A by Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Indonesia on relevant media's false report

Reporter: Recently, the Wall Street Journal published an article on Xinjiang-related issues. What is your comment on this?

Embassy Spokesperson: China is home to various ethnic groups and religions. Ethnic equality, freedom of religious belief, and basic human rights are fully guaranteed by China's constitution and relevant laws. Xinjiang is one of the autonomous regions for ethnic minorities in China. The basic human rights such as the rights to subsistence and development of all 25 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang are fully protected. Unfortunately, Xinjiang suffered gravely from extremism, terrorism, and separatism. Thousands of violent and terrorist attacks occurred from 1990 to 2016, inflicting heavy casualties on the innocent, including Uighur people and Islamic leaders. As faced with such severe circumstances, the Government of Xinjiang Autonomous Region lawfully fought against violent and terrorist crimes while endeavoring to address the root causes, including de-radicalization efforts which achieved effective results. Not a single terrorist attack has happened in Xinjiang over the past three years. It's evident that the issue of Xinjiang is not about human rights, ethnicity or religion, but about fight against terrorism, extremism and separatism.

A few western news agencies seek to smear Xinjiang's counter-terrorism and de-radicalization efforts, and provoke dissension between China and the Islamic world. Their double standards on counter-terrorism,malicious intent to undermine Xinjiang's prosperity and stability as well as China's development, are laid bare to the public. To help the international community better understand the real situation in Xinjiang, the Chinese side has invited over 1,000 people in 70 plus delegations to visit Xinjiang since the end of 2018. They come from government, media, religious groups, academia, international organizations etc. of various countries and regions including Indonesia. They all acclaimed Xinjiang's counter-terrorism and de-radicalization efforts as worth learning from. In March this year, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation adopted a resolution which commended China's efforts in providing care to Muslim citizens. In July, ambassadors of over 50 countries to the UN Office at Geneva co-signed a letter to the president of the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, applauding China's respect and protection of human rights in its counter-terrorism and de-radicalization efforts. In October, at the Third Committee session of the 74th UNGA, more than 60 countries commended in their statements the tremendous human rights progress achieved in Xinjiang, China.

The Wall Street Journal's report slanders Chinese government's efforts to safeguard national sovereignty, protect basic human rights and combat terrorism and extremism, and intentionally distorts the Chinese Embassy's normal exchanges and engagements with Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Majelis Ulama Indonesia and various sectors of the Indonesian society. We hereby express our strong indignation and firm opposition.

China and Indonesia are friendly neighbors who have long supported and helped each other in time of need. To promote friendly exchanges serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples. We will continue working with all sectors of the Indonesian society to strengthen exchanges and cooperation so as to deliver more benefits to the two countries and peoples. Any attempt to undermine the people-to-people friendship between China and Indonesia is destined to fail.

To help our Indonesian friends understand the truth, we would like to share the following videos and documents regarding Xinjiang's counter-terrorism and de-radicalization efforts.
