Ambassador Xiao Qian Visits North Kalimantan

From 1st to 2nd March, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Xiao Qian paid a working visit to North Kalimantan Province. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Yohannes Yudi, Assistant Deputy of Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Wang Liping, Minister Counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs and Mr. Wang Shikun, Director for Political Affairs of Chinese Embassy in Indonesia. The provincial government and local communities extended warm welcome to the delegation. Ambassador Xiao was greeted by North Kalimantan Governor Dr. H. Irianto Lambrie upon arrival at the airport, and enjoyed singing and dancing performance by local youths dressed in traditional costumes.

During the trip, Ambassador Xiao met with Governor Irianto, attended a business roundtable and welcoming dinner hosted by the Governor, and visited major projects in North Kalimantan.

At his meeting with Governor Irianto, Ambassador Xiao extended appreciation to the provincial government for its hospitality and thoughtful arrangements, and shared updates on recent development of China-Indonesia ties. The Chinese side attaches great importance to President Joko Widodo’s initiative of building “Comprehensive Economic Corridors in North Indonesia, said the Ambassador. His visit aims to implement the important consensus reached between the two presidents, explore cooperation opportunities and solicit views from various sectors on enhancing bilateral exchanges and cooperation within the framework of Comprehensive Economic Corridors in North Indonesia. The ambassador was briefed on the vision of Comprehensive Economic Corridor in North Kalimantan and held in-depth discussion with Governor Irianto regarding major areas of cooperation, priority projects, cooperation model and preferential policies. Governor Irianto warmly welcomed Ambassador’s visit and expressed appreciation for supporting the development of Comprehensive Economic Corridors in North Indonesia. North Kalimantan is the latest established province in Indonesia, but it is most committed and well-prepared to cooperate with China, said Governor Irianto. The local government and society look forward to strengthening all-around cooperation with China and stand ready to play a leading role in China-Indonesia cooperation within the framework of Belt and Road Initiative. North Kalimantan looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in infrastructure, energy, mineral, agriculture, fishery, tourism, education and sub-national exchanges and jointly building the North Kalimantan Comprehensive Economic Corridor within the framework of Belt and Road Initiative.

During the business roundtable, Governor Irianto offered a comprehensive briefing on local economy, social and industrial development, as well as resource and geographical advantages to the delegation and representatives of Chinese enterprises. The briefing focused on priority projects, including Kayan River Hydropower Plant, Bulungan Tarakan Connecting Bridge, Industrial District and Tanah Kuning-Mangkupadi International Port, New Independent City Tanjung Selor, as well as investment cooperation in such sectors as oil and gas, palm oil, tourism, fishery and agriculture. According to Governor Irianto, North Kalimantan enjoys social stability and prosperity and is known for its openness and tolerance, as evidenced by the active measures taken by the local government to protect the security and legitimate interests of foreign investors. Business representatives also delivered presentations on relevant projects. After presentations, Ambassador Xiao commended North Kalimantan for its natural scenery, rich resources and friendly people, geographical advantages and promising potential. Ambassador Xiao spoke highly of North Kalimantan’s exchanges and cooperation with China and future prospects. China is ready to actively participate in the development of Comprehensive Economic Corridors in North Indonesia, encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest and boost exchanges and cooperation in various areas. Meanwhile, it is hoped that North Kalimantan would further improve its investment environment and offer preferential policies to Chinese investment

Ambassador Xiao attended the welcoming dinner hosted by Governor Irianto, together with over 100 guests including, leading officials of North Kalimantan, Tarakan and Bulungan, representatives of central government agencies, business representatives from both countries, and local religious leaders.

During the visit, the Ambassador took a speedboat to visit the Moon Bridge Project, Tarakan Port and a local aqua-product processing company, to study the planning, construction process and cooperation demands of the project. In addition, the delegation visited the local WWII Museum and Oil&Gas Museum.
